BESS
The BESS will have a capacity of 480 MW with 4-hours (1,920 MWh) of lithium-ion battery storage, which will provide energy storage capacity for current and future renewable energy generators within the AusNet electricity network. The project will also provide greater grid stability to the broader national electricity market (NEM).
The project will be constructed on private land, approximately 5 km northeast of Shepparton City Center, within Victoria’s Central North Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The BESS will connect directly into the 220kV Shepparton Terminal Substation located west of the project site on an adjacent property.
Construction and operation of the project would involve the following key components:
The Grahamvale BESS proposal will be assessed by the VIC Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) because of its significant potential to contribute to the clean energy transition and climate action targets of the state.
Avenis Energy is currently undertaking technical assessments that will form the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which will be submitted to the DTP for Development Approval.
An EIS is a very in-depth document that outlines specialist assessments and contains detailed planning information regarding the development.
You can learn more about the process on the Victorian Government’s Department of Planning website.
The Grahamvale BESS will improve energy security by reducing the risk of power outages in the region whilst ensuring firmed power supply to the local network.
During the construction phase an estimated 120-180 workers will be required with a large proportion of these being local contractors and suppliers wherever possible.
The operational phase will create at least 4 ongoing full-time roles for the 50-year lifetime of the BESS.
The BESS represents a positive diversification of the local economy and will bring investment to the area. It will deliver additional indirect economic opportunities to local businesses including local grocery stores, restaurants, cafés, accommodation providers, petrol stations, vehicle servicing, pubs, catering, cleaning companies, tradespersons, tool and equipment suppliers and many other businesses.
Community engagement is an important part of development application and allows us to understand any concerns the community may have. If you are interested in learning more about Grahamvale BESS, we encourage you to email us at: info@avenisenergy.com.au
